Sharon Abbott Garcia

Sharon Abbott Garcia created the John Garcia Endowed Memorial Scholarship fund to honor her husband John’s memory following his death in July, 2020. During a varied career in pharmacy John found a passion and an opportunity for innovation, problem solving and direct care to patients (and pets) in compounding at his pharmacy, Abbotts Compounding Pharmacy in Berkeley, CA. During those years he mentored young people to enter the field of pharmacy as he was mentored as a young man by a community pharmacist. After meeting many financial and academic challenges he earned a BA in 1962 and a BS in Pharmacy in 1964 from UOP, the first college graduate in his family. During those years Dean Rowland, the first dean of the School of Pharmacy, personally helped John secure funds to enable him to continue his education. This scholarship will be made available to first and second year Hispanic students enrolled in the School of Pharmacy who likewise need support to overcome their own challenges.
